More than just a couple nerds!
Alex Power, MSc, BSc, NCCP

With a BSc. in Cellular Physiology and an MSc. in Cellular and Molecular Medicine I try my best to blend my love of physiology nerd-stuff with practical advice people can apply to achieve their goals. I genuinely believe that one of the skills that separates coaches is the ability to communicate and teach.
Like many strength enthusiasts I started lifting weights in my basement when I was about 14 years old. Eventually I went on to compete in weightlifting at a national level. Along the way I had the opportunity to work with and learn from top coach and athletes from around the world. I’ve also participated and competed in a laundry list of sports ranging from boxing and judo, to track and field. Although, I make no claims about being any good at these other sports.

In addition to co-founding Praxis Strength and Nutrition with Dr. Schwartz I’m also the founder and Head Coach of Yellowknife Weightlifting Club. Since the early 2000’s I’ve coached professional athletes, university sports teams, high school athletes, track and field, as well as clients just looking to improve their health and fitness. This wide-ranging experience means that there’s not much I haven’t seen.

Driven by a desire to challenge the outdated and often unhealthy nutritional advice I was given as a lineman, I pursued a PhD in Nutritional Science. My academic work focused on youth obesity, endocrine regulation, and performance nutrition, laying the foundation for a coaching approach that is both rigorous and practical.
As a former varsity football player, weightlifter and hammer thrower, I understand the physical and mental demands placed on high-performing athletes. I also competed in Highland Games, which probably has the best outfits of any of these events.
As a nutrition coach, I have worked with a wide range of clients, from Olympic medalists and professional athletes to university teams and people just striving to optimize their health, performance, and appearance. Whether preparing an athlete for peak performance or helping someone feel confident in their own body, I emphasize sustainable strategies backed by science and experience

Tragic Backstory
Ok, we don’t actually have a tragic backstory but we do have a backstory of sorts. Alex and I (also Alex) met when the shorter Alex was coaching sprinting and conditioning for the taller Alex’s university football team. Eventually we completed a bunch of school, coached a bunch of people, and the rest is history. Ok, maybe this wouldn’t be a great script for a movie … but it’s still a backstory.
